Hi there! My name is Niharika, and I am a third-year undergraduate student at Emory University on the pre-med track, majoring in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology (NBB) and minoring in Global Health. In high school, I was awarded the AP Scholar with Distinction and Illinois State Scholar Awards, and was inducted into the National Honors Society. During my high school experience, I discovered a deep passion for tutoring and teaching. I worked as a math instructor at Mathnasium for three years, where I taught math from the kindergarten to the calculus level, and was eventually promoted to Lead Instructor. I’ve carried my passion for teaching with me at Emory, where I currently serve as an inorganic chemistry Learning Assistant in the Department of Chemistry. I also volunteer with the Pediatric Hope Project, where I offer math and English tutoring for chronically ill students. My years of tutoring experience has helped me develop individualized communication and teaching styles to optimize the learning experience for students of all learning types. My priority as a tutor is to tailor each session to the needs of each student by cultivating a welcoming environment for them to learn from mistakes. I emphasize growth over perfection and transparent communication to help students feel more confident in learning objectives. Outside of tutoring, I serve as co-Music Director for Emory Suri, Emory’s premier South-Asian a capella group. In this role, I’ve written and taught original arrangements to singers in the group, direct rehearsals, and have spoken on national panels about how to arrange music. Furthermore, I am the founder of OKTOBEME, a nonprofit organization through which I do henna (mehndi) and sell original artwork around the nation to raise money for various causes. In the past, OKTOBEME has raised money for Raksha, American Cancer Society, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and has held educational programs at children’s museums and libraries around the country. On campus, I also work as an undergraduate research assistant in the TReAD Lab in the Department of Psychology, where I’ve gained valuable experience in assisting with fMRI scans, collecting and analyzing data, and reviewing academic literature. In my free time, I thoroughly enjoy doing my own henna, as well as playing the piano, saxophone, singing, and playing tennis. I am excited to continue nurturing my passion for tutoring with Shires Tutoring Company, and am looking forward to providing services for a wide range of tutoring subjects!
If you have a specific tutor in mind, you're welcome to request them directly — we'll confirm whether they're available and the right fit for your student. Otherwise, Ryan writes a personal email to understand your student's needs, learning style, and goals — then handpicks a tutor from the roster. You're not filling out a form and getting assigned randomly. If the first tutor isn't the right fit after the first session, we'll find you a better match at no extra charge.
Yes. Many families start with a single session to see how the tutor and student connect before committing to a regular schedule. There's no pressure to book in advance — reach out and we'll set something up.
Yes. Many of our tutors are strong across several subjects, and sessions can cover more than one if that's what the student needs that week. Flexibility is built into how we work.
Most of our tutors continue working through breaks, either online or in-person at the college if the tutors remain on campus during that vacation. We'll let you know in advance if a tutor has a gap in availability and arrange coverage with one of our other tutors — in-person or online — in the required subject.
Occasionally, if the student lives very close to the tutor's campus. Most sessions take place on or near the college campus or online. This keeps sessions in an academically focused environment — which tends to produce better results.
The families who see the biggest results are the ones who commit to a regular cadence — typically once, twice, or three times a week. One-on-one tutoring with a student from an elite college, who genuinely understands the material, is a fundamentally different experience from a tutoring center or an app. Most of our clients stay with us for multiple semesters.
Email Ryan@ShiresTutoring.com and mention which tutor and college town you're interested in, or fill out our Request a Tutor form. We typically respond within one business day.
That depends on where your student is starting and how consistently they show up. Niharika will identify the specific gaps, focus sessions on them, and adjust as the student progresses. Families who stick to a weekly schedule typically see meaningful progress within four to six weeks.
