Tutors from the five Claremont Colleges

My name is Anna, and I am a freshman at Scripps College. I am a prospective English major with an interest in minoring in Math and French. I love teaching the subjects that I’m passionate about, especially if I can help students find them less daunting and more accessible.

I have a strong background in English, which I am continuing to pursue as my major. I especially love literature, but having taken both AP English Literature and AP English Language, I am also well-versed in the argumentation/rhetoric side of English. My AP English experience has taught me the literary analysis and essay composition skills that I still use in college, and I would be happy to apply these skills to any students’ needs. Whether a student is working through AP English, reading comprehension, book analysis, or essay writing, I would love to use my knowledge to make things easier.  

As for mathematics, I plan on either double-majoring or minoring in math. I am currently enjoying my Linear Algebra course, and I have just completed Calculus III last semester. Having received top scores on the AP math exams, I am comfortable teaching the subjects required to succeed on these tests. I also formerly worked as a private tutor over the course of three years, teaching elementary level math, so I am also comfortable explaining elementary through AP level mathematics.

I am currently planning on minoring in French and studying abroad in a francophone country. I have been studying French for the past five years, and I would love to help anyone with their grammar, speaking, comprehension, or AP test prep.

My goal as a tutor is to meet students’ where they’re at academically and cater to their individual needs. I hope to make learning enjoyable, empowering, and less stressful. I look forward to working with you!

My name is Ruthie and I am a tutor in Claremont, California and a senior at Pomona college majoring in molecular biology! I am on the pre-medical track with plans to take a couple gap years before medical school, so I am well versed in chemistry and biology topics as well as math and other sciences. I am currently in a research lab looking at the evolution of operons in eukaryotes (come tutor with me and I can tell you all about it — and apply it to your biology classes!).

I have received full marks on the AP Calculus BC exam (a 5) and am on track to graduate Pomona College with an upper quintile GPA. I have prior tutoring experience in both introductory biology and introductory chemistry taught at the college level, so I know what materials are usually being covered and I can apply that experience here. I also have experience tutoring in high school-level math through calculus.

Outside of the classroom, I am an active part of Pomona College’s dance community and last semester I choreographed my own piece and presented it at the fall showcase! I love to spend time outside (maybe when the weather’s nice we could do tutoring sessions outside) and I am really into water sports and watching baseball! I also love reading and always want more book recommendations.

My goal has been and will always be as a tutor to ensure that you grasp a solid understanding of the material. I know how hard it is for me when I don’t understand something, so my hope is to help you grow and learn more in a stress-free and productive environment! I look forward to working with you!

My name is Miranda, and I am a tutor in Claremont, California. I am a freshman at Pomona College. As someone who has been dancing my whole life, I understand the value of finding balance between academics, athletics, and art. That’s why I will be tutoring both ballet and high school subjects.

For ballet, I have taught group and one-on-one lessons for over three years. My primary focus for teaching was beginner-level ballet, but I also have experience with higher-level ballet because I danced competitively in grades K-12. I would love to teach students ages 5-12 with any level of experience!

For academics, I have over two years of experience tutoring. I am able to tutor high schoolers in the subjects of Chemistry (AP or regular), Biology (AP or regular), and Spanish (Level 1-4). I also tutor Math (K-Precalculus), SAT (I scored 1530), Reading and Writing (K-12), and IB test prep: my International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Subject Scores (Scores are out of 7 points, HL means higher level, SL means standard level): Biology SL (6), Business & Management SL (7), English HL (6), History SL (6), Math Applications & Interpretations HL (5), Spanish HL (7).

While my major is currently undecided, I have a love for science and am currently taking chemistry courses. My history of learning Spanish through my Elementary school's Dual Language Program and then continuing to take Spanish classes throughout middle and high school makes me uniquely suited to help with both grammatical and conversational skills. I am excited to continue supporting students' academic and personal growth!

My name is Luci, and I'm a tutor in Claremont, California and a freshman at Harvey Mudd College, looking to major in Engineering or a Mathematics and Biology double major.

During my junior and senior years of high school, I worked as a private tutor for students ages 12-16. I was primarily focused on mathematics but also assisted with reading, writing, history, and science coursework. I also provided PSAT, SAT, and ACT preparation for four students, helping them to build test-taking skills and general subject knowledge. I especially loved getting to know each individual student and learning what worked for them.

I tutor K-12 Math, English, Biology, History, creative writing, PSAT, ACT (my score was 33), and SAT (I scored 1460). I also tutor the AP exams I took (my scores are in parentheses): Calculus AB (4), Computer Science Principles (4), English Language and Composition (4), U.S. History (5), and World History: Modern (5). In addition to private tutoring, I worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at Kumon, an after-school program where I worked with students ages 3 and up to 12th grade in reading and math through Calculus.

Through this experience, I discovered that I enjoyed teaching and working with children. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy staying active–I recently joined club rugby and have played soccer for years–as well as doing arts and crafts, and reading. I enjoy helping my students not only grow academically, but also in confidence, and I am excited to continue teaching throughout my time at Mudd.

My name is Brian, and I'm a tutor in Claremont, California and a double major in Economics and Mathematics at Pomona College, on track to graduate in May 2029. I have placed highly at both the state and national level in economics and personal finance competitions and have conducted independent research at the intersection of economics and public policy under PhD mentorship demonstrating my interest within economics.

I tutor a wide range of subjects, including math (from elementary through calculus 2), economics, test preparation (ACT/SAT--I scored 35 on the ACT), chess (my rating is 1950 FIDE), piano/music theory, english (AP Lang and AP Lit), and more. My AP Scores were (if no score listed then I took the course but not the test): Calculus BC (5), Chemistry (5), Computer Science Principles (4), English Language and Composition (5), Environmental Science, Literature, Macroeconomics (5), Political Science, Psychology (5), Statistics, US History (5), World History.

Beyond academics, I bring extensive teaching and mentoring experience from competitive chess and music. I am ranked in the top 2% of U.S. junior chess players, have competed internationally, and currently teach students from beginner to advanced levels. I am also a classically trained pianist with over a decade of experience, including performances at Carnegie Hall and international competitions, and have taught dozens of students in both individual and group settings.

Across all of these experiences, my goal as a tutor is to adapt to my students’ needs and help them grow both in their respective subjects but also in their way of thinking. I look forward to working with you!
