Hi everyone,

My name is Sean, and I’m a sophomore at UC Berkeley studying Molecular & Cell Biology. I tutor high school biology and chemistry, specializing in Honors/AP Biology, Honors/AP Chemistry, and Biology Olympiad (USABO) preparation. The most important lesson I’ve learned from my own studies is that biology and chemistry are content-heavy. They take time and dedication to master, but the benefits of having a strong foundation in these subjects are endless.

My goal with tutoring is to help students master concepts and confidently apply their knowledge, whether that’s on tests and competitions, research projects, or schoolwork. I believe a strong theoretical foundation in any subject is crucial to success. To that end, I first help students improve their study skills so they can learn and remember new material in the long-term, which I call internalizing content. Equally important is practicing concepts. I guide students through practice problems and tests at a suitable pace, focusing on accuracy first and then speed. The goal is to help students work calmly and effectively on practice problems, so they can be accurate and manage time well on real exams. I work with all students, regardless of their background or skill level. With new students, we first discuss prior experience in the subject and future goals to make a personalized study plan. Students are encouraged to prepare questions about challenging or interesting concepts to discuss during meetings. I help students improve their understanding of these concepts through presentations, example problems, and guided practice.

It has been very rewarding to share my advice and experiences and see students become more confident and enthusiastic about learning. I’ve personally been interested in biology since my freshman year of high school, when I self-studied AP Biology and USABO. I later realized that studying biology and chemistry encourages us to step back from our daily routines and inquire more about how and why our world works. These subjects help us better understand ourselves, animals and plants, and natural processes, something I’ve always found amazing. My interest in tutoring began while serving as president of my high school’s biology and medicine clubs, where I taught students about the sciences through interactive presentations and hands-on activities. I’m excited to help students with their next journeys, whether that’s earning an A/A+ on a biology course, scoring a 5 on the AP, getting into USABO Semifinals, or anything in between. Best of luck to everyone in their studies!

Hi! My name is Rituparna Ivatury, and I am a chemistry student at the University of California, Berkeley. I was drawn to chemistry because of the way it explains the world at a molecular level —from how iron rusts to why carrots are orange. My goal is to pursue a career in pharmaceutical research and work in the field of organic synthesis.

I tutor chemistry and mathematics at a range of levels, from foundational concepts all the way through AP Chemistry and AP Calculus BC. My tutoring experience includes formally tutoring AP Chemistry during my senior year of high school, as well as coaching middle school students in debate—an experience that taught me to break down complex ideas and communicate them to younger students. At Berkeley, my coursework in chemistry, physics, and mathematics has deepened my understanding of these subjects well beyond the high school level.

My approach to teaching centers on the why. I focus on helping students truly understand the reasoning behind what they're doing— why a reaction works the way it does, why a mathematical rule holds true, and how one concept builds on the next. I also believe in patience, and slowing down so the student can keep up. I’m looking forward to tutoring students within the Berkeley area, and helping them build a lasting understanding of chemistry and math.

Grishma
University of California Berkeley, majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Public Health
Tutoring subjects:
Elementary School Math, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Middle School Science, Biology, Chemistry, Elementary School Reading & Writing, Study Skills
Test scores:
SAT: 1410 (Math 710, Reading & Writing 680) AP Scores: Biology (4), Calculus AB (4), Chemistry (3), English Language (5), European History (4), Macroeconomics (3), Microeconomics (3), Spanish Language (3)
Hi there! I'm Grishma, and I'm so glad you're here! I'm a third-year undergraduate at UC Berkeley studying Molecular and Cellular Biology and Public Health, and if there's one thread that runs through everything I do, it's this: I want the people around me to feel seen, supported, and capable of more than they thought possible.

That drive traces back to my own experience growing up. I remember what it felt like to feel invisible, and I made a promise to myself that I would never let anyone in my care feel that way. That promise led me to volunteer in hospitals in high school, to take on student government leadership, and eventually to pursue a career in healthcare, where I hope to provide holistic, equitable care that meets patients and families exactly where they are. Right now, I'm putting that curiosity to work as a research assistant with UC Berkeley's Cognitive Development Lab and the Stone Research Foundation in San Francisco, where my projects span everything from understanding human development to improving outcomes in orthopedic treatment. Biology, for me, has never just been a subject – it's a lens for understanding people's lives and figuring out how to make them better.

That same spirit is what I bring to tutoring. I have over four years of experience working with students across a wide range of ages, settings, and subjects. I spent three years with Kumon, where I oversaw the classwork and progress of 15+ students and eventually stepped into a mentorship role for new staff, which I loved. I also worked with Mathnasium and took on private students, where I got to design creative, engaging approaches to math for kids as young as five all the way through more advanced coursework. Math is where I have the deepest experience, but I've grown genuinely confident in science and language arts as well, and I love the challenge of finding the right entry point for each individual learner.

What I care most about as a tutor isn't just the material, but it's the relationship. I want every student I work with to feel comfortable asking the questions they've been afraid to ask, to feel like the session is a safe space rather than another source of pressure. I pay close attention to how each student learns and where their confidence dips, and I adjust my approach accordingly. My goal is never just to get through the homework but to help students build a real sense of understanding and, hopefully, a little bit of joy in learning along the way. I'd be honored to work with your family and look forward to meeting your student!
